Beckham Koscielny,
one busy kid

In 2013, six-week-old Beckham Koscielny became a STARS Very Important Patient after falling seriously ill due to a heart condition. With the aid of a STARS critical care team, he was transported from his rural community to a major hospital. There, he was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy — a condition in which the heart cannot pump blood effectively because the left ventricle, the main pumping chamber, is enlarged and weakened.

The Koscielny family took it day-by-day as Beckham spent an entire month in hospital. Through their strong will and the support of their community, family, and friends, they persevered during those trying times.

Today, Beckham is a healthy kid who loves staying active. From riding his bike to playing hockey, Beckham is keeping his parents busy.

“He goes a mile a minute most days,” said Bryce Koscielny, Beckham’s father. He’s always been a kid that woke up at 6 a.m. and begs to stay up as late as he possibly can. He’s riding his bike. He’s running around the neighborhood with kids.”

His parents plan on continuously supporting STARS’ mission and encourage those around them to do the same.

We can’t say thank you enough, because without STARS, we wouldn’t have our son.”

The Koscielny’s were invited to the 2017 Powell Cup — an internal STARS hockey game — where Beckham, a big hockey fan, was tasked with dropping the puck.

“I remember holding the trophy, getting the jersey and going on the bench,” said Beckham.

He says he likes to, “Play hockey, play hockey, play hockey.” Then he smiles and adds, “Sports in general.”

Beckham supports STARS’ mission by continuing to share his story with his classmates and friends. During a show and tell, Beckham decided to bring in a small wooden STARS-branded helicopter, to share why it meant so much to him. He appreciates the effort and says he supports STARS “because they saved my life.”
