Marie Somerville,
a focus on education

Marie Somerville was an aspiring barrel racer, spending countless hours practising and competing. One day when practising for competition, her horse fell, leading her to severe whiplash and trauma to her brainstem and spinal cord. She required immediate medical attention.

“Hoof prints suggested that my horse stumbled,” said Marie. “I do not remember the accident; all I know is I was putting in a barrel practice with my horse.”

A STARS medical crew was dispatched to provide Marie with urgent critical care and transport her to the nearest major hospital, where she remained in a coma for the following three months. When she awoke, she had to face serious challenges, including regaining her ability to walk and restoring her speech. With the unwavering support of her family and friends, Marie has made a strong recovery.

Reflecting on her journey, Marie acknowledges the immense effort and dedication of the STARS team. The crew’s timely intervention and skilled care were crucial in stabilizing her condition and ensuring she received the necessary treatment. Throughout her recovery Marie’s determination, and the support she received from her loved ones, played a critical role in overcoming the challenges she has faced.

“Without STARS, I would not be alive today,” said Marie.

Thank you for saving my life, and thank you for supporting me in my educational assistant journey. Thank you to my mom, who’s with me every step of the way. Thank you.”
